공공도서관

1961년 서울의 공공도서관은 국립중앙도서관, 국회도서관, 서울대학교부속도서관, 시립남산도서관, 시립종로도서관 등 5개였다. 2011년 현재 서울시의 공공도서관은 123개소이며, 1961년과 비교하면 약 25배 이상인 셈이다. 도서관은 1972년 이후 증가하기 시작하였으며, 특히 2004년 이후 빠르게 증가하였다.

1961년 약 74만 명이 도서관을 이용한데 비해 2011년 연간 이용자는 약 5,454만 명으로, 한 해 평균 시민 1인당 5회 이상 공공도서관을 이용한 셈이다.

PUBLIC LIBRARIES

In 1961, there were 5 public libraries in Seoul – the National Library of Korea, the National Assembly Library, Seoul National University Library, Namsan Public Library, and Jongno Public Library. Today in Seoul, there are 123 public libraries, a 25 times increase since 1961. The number of public libraries began to increase in 1972, and saw strong growth after 2004.

In 1961, there were about 740,000 visitors to the public libraries in 1961, but in 2011, there were about 54.54 million visitors, which means that a resident will have visited a public library an average of 5 times per year.
